What's the Deal With Our Water

,
Water is part of our lives. It's everywhere we look. I guess that's why we take it for granted, until we are thirsty that is.

Random Facts about Water

  • Around 75 % of the earth's surface is covered with water. The total amount of water on the earth is about 326 million cubic miles of water.

  • The weight a person loses directly after intense physical activity is mainly weight from water (e.g. sweat), not fat.

  • Water leads to increased energy levels. Likewise, lack of water leads to energy slumps. The most common cause of daytime fatigue is actually mild dehydration.

  • Water is the primary mode of transportation for all nutrients in the body and is essential for proper circulation.

For many years, society has told us to drink anything but water to satisfy our thirst - be it soft drinks, coffee, beer etc... however water has become cool to drink again. And it's a good thing too, as roughly 70% of our body is made of water; approximately 80% when we are babies.

Is All Water Equal?

As water is the most universal solvent we have, it very often dissolves the substances it comes into contact with, which can end up becoming part of the water itself.

This is why we have minerals in our water to begin with. Unfortunately this can also work against us when water is passing through polluted areas with rusty pipes or is treated with chemicals. Very often this can cause the water that comes out of the tap to be anything but healthy.

The good news is there are ways to ensure that the water we drink is pure, clean and healthy, regardless of what it has been subjected to on its journey to the tap.

Despite all the benefits that water provides, it's estimated that more than 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. If you consider that our bodies are made of 2/3 water (i.e. we are basically water), its amazing many people still have poor drinking habits.

Our body, as our vehicle that helps us get around the earth, can only perform optimally when given optimal fuel (water and food). Just as the quality of fuel we put in our motor vehicle influences how well it performs, the same principle applies with the quality of fuel we put in our bodies.

What is Healthy?

Ideally we are looking for pure water that is rich in vitamins and has no added viruses, bacteria or drugs. Here is my definition of healthy water: Water that is free from chemicals, that has a pH Level of 7.0 and carries with it a natural balance of trace minerals.

Be selective in your bottled water choice, as sometimes water that sits too long in plastic bottles can absorb plastic substances, which are not healthy to drink.

Coming up in this series of posts we will be looking at what's in our water, what water is best to drink and how much water we need to drink to be healthy.

Speaking of which, how much water do you currently drink a day and what type of water do you prefer?
